Walter William Vincent was born at Tivetshall (Depwade Q1-1894 4B:244), baptised in Tivetshall St Mary on 6th June 1894, son of
James and Charity VINCENT (née SMITH). Maiden name SMITH according to marriage registration (Depwade Q2-1886 4B:420).
His grandmother seems to be born Le GRYS, then becomes in turn,SMITH, then HART, then FREWER.
1901 census...Aged 7, he was at The Street, Wickham Skeith, Hartismere with his father James VINCENT [42] farm labourer born Tivetshall; his mother Charity [32] born Thorpe Abbotts; sisters Matilda [15], Norgett [12] and Georgina [3] born Wickham Skeith; brothers Arthur [14] and Albert [10]; grandmother Georgina FREWER [50] born Thorpe Abbotts Thorpe Abbotts. All the children except Georgina were born in Tivetshall. 1911 census...Aged 20, farm labourer, he was at New Zealand Cottages, Barnham, with his father, brothers Arthur (farm labourer), Alfred [10] and Morris [5]; sisters May [16] and Louisa [13]. Now all the children are recorded as born in Wickham Skeith. His mother was visiting James and Matilda MORRIS ( possibly his sister and brother in law ?) at the Cherry Tree, Tendring, Essex. His parents were later at Blackdyke, Hockwold,Brandon. |

He enlisted in York. "Soldiers died" incorrectly has him born in Barnham
Having been in billets at Hooplines, on 24th they moved into trenches at Le Touquet, relieving the Durhams. The war diary is very brief:- 27.5.15. Trenches [casualties 9 wounded] Lt Col F W TOWEY took over temporary command of Brigade. Major G. LANG assumed command of the Battalion. Houplines is on the NE edge of Armentieres and Touquet is a short distance further NE. CWGC records, of the 1st West Yorkshires, just Walter William Vincent dying that day.
